SUMMARY:Horlings: Transforming places together: citizens and community enga
 gement responding to climate change
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Prof. Dr. Lummina Horlings\nInstitute of Speaker: Univ
ersity of Groningen\, Department of Spatial Planning and Environment Groni
 ngen\, Netherlands\nTopics:\nBauing.\, Architektur\, Umwelt\, Wirtschaft\n
Location:\n Name: Andere (online per Zoom)\n Street: \n City: \n Ph
one: \n Fax: \nDescription: The simple evidence of global ambient tempera
ture rises\, changing rainfall patterns and more frequent and extreme weat
her events are indisputable and will severely impact communities and socie
ty as a whole. Incremental adaptation and coping strategies (such as build
ing higher dikes) may not be enough to protect communities from greater ri
sks in the future. Scholarly attention has therefore shifted to the concep
t of transformative adaptation to address the root causes of climate risks
\, shifting systems away from unsustainable\, unjust and unequal trajector
ies. The key topic which will be discussed is how transformative citizens
initiatives and resourceful communities take the lead in transforming plac
es together. An emergence of citizens initiatives in the field of food\, e
nergy and nature can be witnessed taking matters in their own hand within
the ‘do-it yourself’ democracy. This creates dilemma’s when collabor
ating with spatial planners. Networked movements such as transition towns
and eco-villages contribute to the ‘up-\, out- and deep-scaling’ of co
mmunity strategies\, while engaging in capacity building and different dim
ensions of transformation. A conclusion so far is that key conditions for
the development of place-based transformative responses to climate change
are capacity building\, inclusive governance\, place leadership\, ‘inne
r’ transformation and scaling of successful practices. Co-Presentatio
n by Dr. Franziska Ehnert (IOER Dresden) Reframing places\, communities
and identities: The contextualisation of social learning processes in urb
an experimentation Urban experimentation has emerged as a transdiscipli
nary and co-creative research approach\, which seeks to harness the potent
ial of proximity. However\, there is limited understanding of the contextu
alisation of experimentation in local settings and the reframing of places
\, communities and identities. Adopting a relational understanding of spac
e\, this research seeks to shed light on the meanings attached to artefact
s and spaces\, and illustrate social learning processes in socio-material
 contexts.
