Description

Discover the cutting-edge intersection of quantum information and particle physics: learn how the recent detection of quantum entanglement in top quark pairs by ATLAS and CMS is opening new frontiers at the LHC.

The ATLAS and CMS Collaborations have recently made the first observation of quantum entanglement in top quark pair production. Since the Standard Model of particle physics is after all a quantum field theory, one might indeed expect such a fundamental feature of quantum mechanics to hold, almost trivially. So what’s all the fuss about? In this seminar, I will try to disentangle the technicalities of this measurement, to show how quantum information might help us in high energy particle physics, and vice-versa.
Looking forward, I will discuss the suitability of various top quark and Higgs boson production processes to further study quantum entanglement, the violation of Bell’s inequalities, as well as more subtle concepts from quantum information. Beyond larger datasets, these measurements would also benefit from the precise reconstruction of complex event topologies, which may only be possible with sophisticated machine learning algorithms. From precision measurements at the high energy frontier a brand new sub-field is now emerging, quantum information at the LHC.
