- Description
- Non-Hermiticity arises widely in condensed matter, optics, and high energy physics, including systems with gain and loss, finite density, and asymmetric dynamics. Analytic study of these systems is complicated by the relaxation of traditional assumptions for Hermitian systems. Numerical analysis is complicated by a sign problem, a generally NP-hard barrier to Monte Carlo sampling. Fortunately, the subset of non-Hermitian systems with so-called PT-type symmetries is more tractable. We show how to overcome sign problems in large classes of PT-symmetric field theories, providing new insights into the nature and origins of computational complexity. We also show that these systems generally support moat phase behavior. .
